Welcome to the APSA MENA Politics Section!

The Middle East and North Africa Politics Section is an academic society at the American Political Science Association (APSA), established to support, develop and publish research on the politics of the MENA region utilizing interdisciplinary methodological, theoretical and empirical tools. It seeks to fully integrate the rigorous study of the politics of the Middle East with the broader discipline of Political Science, to serve as an institutional home for the community of political scientists dedicated to the Middle East, and to fully integrate scholars from the MENA region and diverse scholars from the United States into the global study of Middle East politics.

Founded: 2018

Our Diversity Statement: The open exchange of ideas that is central to our academic work requires a community that embraces diversity and acts inclusively. The APSA MENA Politics section works to affirm the dignity of every person and group and therefore rejects discrimination or exclusion on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender or sexual identity or orientation, religion, national origin or ancestry, ability, or other ascriptive characteristics.  As a section devoted specifically to the study of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), we seek diverse perspectives and analytic approaches toward the politics of the region; moreover, we work to ensure that our activities include and are informed by scholars from the MENA region, reflect different subfields in political science, and engage scholars of differing rank, professional status, and institutional affiliation . We encourage the participation of members from traditionally underrepresented institutions, whether in the MENA or elsewhere, as well as those from underrepresented or traditionally-excluded communities. We affirm a commitment to diverse methodological and analytical approaches, interdisciplinary work, or work that explores comparisons between the MENA and other regions. These values are expressed in section programming, internal practices and decision-making, appointments for committees and other positions, and in our broader relationship to APSA as a whole.
